Despite being a personal injury law expert for over a decade, until recently, I was oblivious to just how many toxic chemicals are in the plethora of products I have been smearing all over my face and body since my late teens. It was only when I was referred to a dermatologist because of a problem I was experiencing with recurring chapped lips that I suddenly became aware of the dangers of the beauty industry.

Don’t get me wrong, I love wearing makeup and the luscious feeling of pampering myself with luxurious masks and moisturisers. Now nearing my 40’s, I am almost dependent on a bit of foundation and concealer so when I was faced with the idea that I may be allergic to some of my staple makeup products, I was horrified….more at the idea of having to wear no makeup than the possibility that I have been slowly but surely poisoning myself with the products I have been using!

Prior to being sent for full blown allergy testing, I went on a de-stressing detox retreat in the US where I went without makeup for a whole 10 days. What a liberating experience that was!  After the first couple of days, I was not remotely bothered about being seen without my makeup and my rosy cheeks were even complimented by a number of friends I made out there. On my return home, though, one of my first tasks on my “to do list” was to go and buy new makeup from a range that uses only natural ingredients so I wasn’t that brave after all!

The retreat definitely helped my condition but didn’t cure it so when I got home, I had to endure a week of allergy testing where every product I have been using was placed against the skin of my back, arms and stomach. I wasn’t allowed to wash my hair or body during the week and found the whole process most uncomfortable.

At the end of the allergy testing week I was told I had an allergy to a preservative often used in certain brands of toothpaste and makeup wipes. Speaking to the dermatologist after the testing was complete really opened my eyes to just how dangerous the modern day beauty industry is to our skin.
